In the Archives: The Maroon Jackets
You have probably noticed them at Centenary College events over the past 89 years. Perhaps it was during an athletic event, parade, campus tour, orientation activity, or recent convocation. The Maroon Jackets have served as the official hosts of Centenary College since 1931. With origins as a women’s pep squad, the early history of the Maroon Jackets – as documented by themselves – will soon be accessible online.
Scrapbooks created by the Maroon Jackets are housed in Centenary’s Archives and Special Collections. The oldest scrapbook, covering the years 1931 to 1962, will be included in an upcoming digitization project funded by the Centenary Muses. It will be one of the first items added to the Centenary Archives’ collections hosted by the Louisiana Digital Library (LDL), a collaborative online library accessible to the public here.
“I’m excited to begin our membership with the LDL,” says Chris Brown, Centenary’s Archivist. “We plan to use the platform to provide access to a wide variety of our primary sources – photographs, diaries, letters, audio recordings, video recordings, and scrapbooks. The Maroon Jackets scrapbook includes unpublished photographs, membership rosters, and handmade programs…in the shape of a maroon jacket, of course. This type of material will greatly complement our existing online collections of the college’s yearbooks, student newspapers, and course catalogs.”
