Awards
Ms. Lisa Cronin, MBA instructor and new visiting assistant professor of accounting, was named the 2022 Virginia Shehee Most Influential Woman of the Year.
Dr. James Eakin, assistant professor of music, was selected as a semi-finalist in The American Prize in two divisions, the Choral Competition division for two works, “#twitterlieder,” and “Great Flowing River,” and in the Orchestral Composition division for “Symphony Americana.”
Dr. David Hoaas, Professor of Economics, received the Carol A. Luthman Meritorious Service Award from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). This award is presented to individuals whose volunteerism and commitment to the best principles of the academy and of accreditation personify the ideals of the Commission.
Performances
Dr. Janani Sridhar, Assistant Professor of Music, will be making her Carnegie Hall debut at Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage as the soprano soloist in Poulenc's Gloria. Sridhar was also selected to be a part of the Source Song Festival in Minneapolis, Minnesota, this summer. In addition, Sridhar was invited to perform the role of Turan in “The Threshold of Brightness” in New York City this June.
Presentations
Dr. Mohammad Ali presented his research, “The Effect of Idiosyncratic and Covariate Shocks on Human Capital Outcomes at Different Stages of Childhood and Adolescence,” at the Southwestern Social Science Association Annual Meeting 2022.
Dr. Andia Augustin-Billy, associate professor of French and Francophone studies, presented a virtual lecture, “The Enslaver Enslaved: The Black Dominator in Creole Louisiana,” on February 25 for the Center for the Humanities at Washington University in St. Louis.
Dr. Priyanka Chakraborty, assistant professor of economics, presented “Gender composition of children, gender norms, and the labor market outcomes of women” at the Southwestern Social Science Association annual meeting in April 2022.
Dr. Michael Hicks, assistant professor of education, and Dr. Terrie Johnson, visiting assistant professor of Education, are presenting “Relationship Based Coaching: Mentor Teachers Enhancing the Impact Cycle” at the Teacher Leader Summit 2022 in New Orleans at the end of May.
Dean of Students Mark Miller and Dr. Valerie Breashears, director of integrated advising, presented “Integrated Advising: A Data-Driven, Student-Centered Approach to Advising and Mentoring” at the NASPA Annual Conference.
Dr. Tom Ticich, professor of chemistry, and members of Centenary's Chemistry Club, including students Jerney Harms, Payton Lii, and Connor Wellman, represented the club at the American Chemical Society Spring 2022 meeting. Harms gave a poster presentation on the club, and the club was recognized for its campus activities at the Student Chapter Awards during the conference.
Dr. Kathrine Weeks, associate professor of chemistry, and student Connor Wellman presented findings from their Faculty-Student Research Award at the American Chemical Society Spring 2022 meeting. The presentation was titled “Deprenyl requires CED-9 to delay development in Ceanorhabditis elegans.”
Publications
Dr. Mohammad Ali, assistant professor of economics, recently published the articles, “Persistence and Catch-Up in Mathematics Skills in Ethiopia: Evidence from Childhood and Adolescence,” in the Journal of African Development and “We are how much we Eat: Nutrient-Specific versus Calorie-Based Adult-Equivalent Scales” in Agricultural and Food Sciences Research.
Dr. Emily Leithauser, Assistant Professor of English, had poems published in The New Yorker (“Cardiac Flicker”) and Cortland Review (“Amniotic”).
Scholarship & Research
Dr. Priyanka Chakraborty, assistant professor of economics, along with two students, Jaron Petreas and Sethan Ward, was awarded a Student-Faculty Research Award to explore the question: “Does the gender composition of children affect the sectoral labor force participation and employment of parents, particularly mothers and does this vary by race, ethnicity and generational migration?” Chakraborty was also selected to guest lecture on “Practical Aspects of Behavioral and Experimental Economics” at Shiv Nadar University, India and was selected to present her work “Gender composition of children, gender norms and the labor market outcomes of women,” at the Southwestern Social Science Association.
Dr. Mandi Donahoe, assistant professor of political science, was awarded a Faculty Research Award for her study “Community Peacebuilding in the Wake of Brexit.”
Dr. Jeanne Hamming, professor of English and associate dean, was accepted into the inaugural Fellows Programs of the American Conference of Academic Deans.
Dr. Bellee Jones-Pierce, Assistant Professor of English, and Dr. Christal Schoen, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, have been accepted to the Associated Colleges of the South Teaching and Learning Workshop in June 2022.
Dr. Joshua Lawrence, associate professor of chemistry, was awarded a Board of Regents Supervised Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) grant to mentor student Rose Deshler in the study “Synthesis of perfluoroalkyl derivatives of estrone and conversion to fluorescent estrogen receptor ligands.”
Dr. Latoya Pierce, Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer, submitted a successful application for Centenary College to participate in the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation Campus Centers Institute was selected. The Centenary Team – Pierce, Team Lead; Dr. Andia Augustin-Billy; Dr. Amy Friesenhahn; and Dr. Joshua Lawrence – will participate in the institute in June 2022.
